The upper part of the compass consists of a hinged plate , which is calibrated in hours, and another scale indicates minutes, which can be set according to the local latitude angle. The magnetic compass allows the sundial to be set to north, and the sundial hand casts a shadow and indicates the local time.
This instrument can be folded compactly when not in use, and the compass rests on solid brass leveling screws that can be adjusted to level the compass. It can be used to calculate time and orientation."
